Ajwa are the king of dates and come in different sizes somewhat round shaped. They are blackish in colour with few white striations. They have a sweet taste and have a succulent chewy texture. Ajwa dates are renowned for their health benefits and recommended by the Prophet ﷺ.

Narrated from Sa’d ibn Abi Waqaas that the Prophet ﷺ said: “Whoever eats seven ‘ajwa dates in the morning, will not be harmed by any poison or witchcraft that day.” (Hadith Bukhari & Muslim)

What is the difference between Ajwa Aliyah and Ajwa Al-Madinah?

Ajwa Aaliyah, are dates that are planted in the Al-Alia area, which is south of the Prophet’s ﷺ Mosque in Madinah. As for Ajwa Al-Madinah, they are dates which are planted in Madinah in general.

Aaliyah means “high” or “superior”, hence some might label good quality dates as Aaliyah but they are actually Ajwa Al-Madinah.

Dates Grading:

The normal proper way of grading dates as used in Saudi Arabia will be Grade 1, 2 , 3 and so on – Grade 1referring to the best quality. Some will use premium for their best grade.

They are normally graded by colour (the darker the better for Ajwa), absence of defects, flabbiness and other characters as applicable by the experts. Size of the date does not score much on its quality grading as they have another grading for size.

Dates Size:

Dates are graded for their size usually by: A – Large, B – Medium, C – Small. So, a Grade C date can also be a premium quality grade although it is small in size.

Some will grade very large grades as jumbo, AA, VIP and so on, but it does not mean it is the best grade although they are large in size.

Breaking Fast with Ajwa Dates:

We are aware that it is the Sunnah to break fast (especially in Ramadhan) with dates. Most of us will go for 3 dates before we continue consuming our meals.

Grade A dates are large in size, so if you are going for the Sunnah of having 7 dates to break your fast (with reference to the Prophet’s ﷺ as mentioned above) and still want to have you meal, you might want to go for Grade B or C, as 7 Grade A dates can make you quite full.
