HABWAH  (حبوة)

Habwah have been widely used especially in the Arab world in following one of the Sunnah sitting positions of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم.

The word Habwah, which is derived from the word Ihtihaa’; points to an object that is being used when sitting in the Ihtibaa’ position. Ihtabaa’ means to sit on the buttocks with both thighs raised, and both arms folded around the thighs. Sometimes instead of the arms a habwah e.g. cloth, lungi or a turban is tied around the back, both thighs and legs for support so that both arms will be free. Besides gaining rest, this manner of sitting displays humbleness and peacefulness. For this reason, the Prophet   صلى الله عليه وسلم and the Sahaabah رضي الله عنهم many a times have sat in this manner. It is said that sitting in the ihtibaa’ position is like leaning on a wall for the Arabs as there are no walls to be leaned on in the wilderness.

From Shamaa’il Tirmidhi:

حدثنا سلمة بن شبيب، حدثنا عبد الله بن إبراهيم المدني، حدثنا إسحاق بن محمد الأنصاري عن ربيع بن عبد الرحمن بن أبي سعيد الخدري قال: كان رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم إذا جلس في المسجد احتبى بيديه

Abu Sa’eed Khudari Radiyallahu ‘Anhu says: “When the Messengerصلى الله عليه وسلم  sat in the masjid, he sat in the Ihtibaa’ position using his two hands”.
